The HousewifeI am a busy wife and mother of three young adults who recently resigned from my position at a beautiful historical house museum in the upper Midwest to relocate with my husband to the South.
Eleven (11) moves over the course of our marriage has allowed us to live all over the United States and have inspired many great recipes as I immerse myself into the regional or local cooking styles of that area.
I rarely use recipes as they are written... instead I look to them for guidance and ideas and then do my own thing. In our family it's a joke that the only time something doesn't turn out for me is when I actually follow a recipe exactly as it's written!
Long time readers will know one of my favorite phrases is; Play with your Food! Meaning - don't follow the recipe - play with it! Substitute! Make it your own!
~An American Housewife
How I came up with the url name of my site
Back in the late 90's, my Mommy-friends and I had a discussion that revolved around the fact the Barbie Doll has done everything from being an astronaut to a doctor to a teacher, but they would never let Barbie be 'just' a housewife. Gasp! To rebel a little, my friends deemed me the the original 'Housewife Barbie' in honor of the profession we had chosen and were quite proud of. When I had to think of a url for a website an An American Housewife was already taken, I thought it would be funny to use my nickname at the time. The name "An American Housewife" is a take-off of that nickname and the name of a cookbook I hope to publish one day. I'm proud to be an American and proud to be a housewife.
